Briem's acting career began in the National Theater Iceland when she was just 9 years old. She was a child actor in Iceland and was a part of radio and television plays. Briem, then 16, moved to London and took part in the production of Lenin In Love at The New End Theater. Briem got a spot at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art when she was 19-years-old. For the next 3 years, she attended the academy, earning an acting degree as well as it was awarded the John Barton Prize for Scenic Fight.
